Florida Math Day 2008
Topic: Financial Literacy
The Office of Mathematics and Science at the Florida Department of Education was very pleased with the efforts in schools across Florida, in making our First Annual Math Day on May 1, 2008 a success. Each of the four lessons at grades, 2, 5, 7, and 9-12, exemplified student-centered, inquiry-based approaches to teaching Florida's new Next Generation Standards for Science, and demonstrated that Florida is at the forefront in the national effort to improve science education for all of our students.
The Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) and Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors (FAMS), were also instrumental in supporting Florida Science Day, by offering awards to the writers of each of the four selected lessons. Those awards included a one-year membership to FCTM, complimentary registration at the FCTM Annual Meeting on October, 16-18, 2008 in Jacksonville, FL. Additionally, $500 was awarded by FCTM for support to attend the annual meeting and $250 was awarded by FAMS. The Office of Mathematics and Science thanks the FCTM and FAMS Executive Boards for their support of this initiative.
