Project Overview

The Leadership for Mathematics and Science Instruction (LMSI) Professional Development Project

The purpose of the Leadership for Mathematics and Science Instruction project is to prepare Florida’s school leaders to make changes in mathematics and science instruction that are aligned with the challenging Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.

The purpose is accomplished in the following ways:

o   by providing content-focused professional development in mathematics and science for elementary school principals and their respective teacher leaders;

o   by building capacity for enhanced and ongoing school-based content-specific professional development for all mathematics and science teachers as they work in concert with their school leaders through communities of instructional practice;

o   by promoting participation in video club lesson study that examines effective instructional practices in order to strengthen teaching skills for mathematics and science teachers and school leaders; and

o   by bringing mathematics and science teacher leaders in elementary schools together with higher education facilitators, who are scientists, mathematicians, and educational leaders, to increase their subject matter knowledge and improve student learning.

The professional development takes place over the course of one year. Cohorts of up to 80 participants, consisting of elementary principals and their teacher leaders, will attend four face-to-face sessions, each spanning two days, focusing on mathematics and science content, instruction, and assessment. Between each of the sessions, participants will engage all mathematics and science faculty in their schools in activities designed to enhance knowledge of the standards and how to teach them. All training materials, travel, and accommodation costs are paid through the project. The project also includes substitute teacher reimbursement and teacher leaders’ stipend for summer training sessions.

Central topics in the leadership institutes:

· Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Mathematics and Science (including the Florida Standards Database and CPALMS)

· Depth of knowledge of the Standards, instructional activities and assessments in mathematics and science

· Video club lesson study

· Algebra and Algebraic Thinking

· Motion

· The Nature of Science

· Integration of mathematics, science, and literacy

Deliverables:

Principals and teacher leaders will leave each session with materials to improve math and science instruction in their schools. Topics and activities include the following:

· Videos of classroom instruction

· Depth of knowledge activities

· Observation protocol to guide standards based classroom observation

· Books for school teams to read and discuss

· Journal articles related to improving instruction and assessment

· Secure online forum to share presentations and resources to guide inquiry-based lesson study, online collaboration and book study

Over 1000 principals have registered to participate in professional development cohorts that will meet in 2009 or 2010.
