The professional development takes place over the course of one year.  Cohorts of up to 75 participants, consisting of elementary teacher leaders and their principals, will attend four face-to-face sessions, each spanning two days, focusing on mathematics and science content, instruction, and assessment.  Between each of the sessions, participants will engage all mathematics and science faculty in their schools in activities designed to enhance knowledge of the standards and how to teach them.

Central topics in the leadership institutes:

• Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Mathematics and Science (including the Florida Standards Database and CPALMS)
• Depth of knowledge of the Standards, instructional activities and assessments in mathematics and science
• Video club lesson study
• Algebra and Algebraic Thinking (sessions 1 and 2)
• Force and Motion (sessions 3 and 4)
• Integration of mathematics, science, and literacy

Deliverables:

Teacher leaders and principals will leave each session with materials to guide school-based lesson study and ongoing interactions with their peers related to improved mathematics and science instruction.  Topics and activities include the following:

• Videos of classroom instruction
• Depth of knowledge activities
• Observation protocol to guide standards based classroom observation
• Books to read and discuss with peer teachers as well as principals
• Journal articles related to improving instruction and assessment
• Secure online share site for presentations and other resources to guide inquiry-based lesson study, online collaboration and book study
