K-3 Mathematics Formative Assessment System (MFAS) - Preliminary Project

ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

“Teachers’ regular use of formative assessment improves their students’ learning, especially if teachers have additional guidance on using the assessment to design and to individualize instruction. Although research to date has only involved one type of formative assessment (that based on items sampled from the major curriculum objectives for the year, based on state standards), the results are sufficiently promising that the Panel recommends regular use of formative assessment for students in the elementary grades.” (National Mathematics Advisory Panel Final Report, 2008)

The purpose of Florida's Formative Assessment Project for Kindergarten through Grade 3 Mathematics is to research, design, build, and support a classroom-based assessment system that informs instruction. This system will be designed to provide teachers with tools and strategies to identify what students know and can do and to decide on next steps for instruction.

Toward this goal, by June 30, 2009, FCR-STEM is:
  1. defining the purposes, assessment design, mode of administration, measurement model, use of results, time-frame, and implementation strategy through collaboration with the Florida Department of Education and an advisory group
  2. identifying the relevant focus of a literature review
  3. soliciting information from other states
  4. preparing a preliminary plan for the development of mathematics assessments.
